There are novels a reader might enjoy; worlds a reader might visit over and over again, and then there are moments of pure literary synergy where, in a particular novel, the world and the reader collide and everything else just disappears.  Black Hawaii offers several of these electric moments in time. The centrally explored theme in Black Hawaii presents an interesting dynamic. Absolute power in a single being has a tendency to rob an individual of their rights, or, leaves a group of people without choice or representation.  There is a shocking moment where a character cries tears of helplessness over his loss of autonomy and fear of his future, and then he goes and very publicly tears those very things away from the people who trust him. The foil theme to this arc falls with two other characters who must mutually surrender powers and control in order gain who they are as individuals and have a future together.  It all dovetails nicely. In this installment we see the fall of a regime and the dawn of a new era. If you have enjoyed Andrijeski 's tie in series Vampire Detective Midnight, you know the future for this world our characters populate currently is oppressive and bleak. In Black Hawaii we see the pin pulled on the grenade that launches the war hinted at in VDM. Given the quality of Andrijeski's writing and the brilliance of her books, it promises to be bloody and fascinating.  Personally I can't wait.
