While a bit confused at first by the prologue, I quickly became entranced by Nell and Nathaniel’s tale.Everything was perfect, from their “elopement” to their marriage of convenience, their first awkward times together, the beginning of their married life and of course their strange assignment. I have smiled, thrilled, swooned and cheered with them.Eleanor has spend her whole life believing she has no other prospect than spinsterhood, and while it was not what she longed for, she made so and tried to give a purpose to her life, one she will not be a burden for her family.So she is first to jump on the opportunity that by helping the one man who makes her heart fluttering, she secures herself a different outcome.While she might appears mousy and dowdy, she is intriguing, forthright and funnily sweet and caring.I loved she didn’t let her inexperience stand between her and the man she admires. She does not cower, she enters her marriage her head held high, and she wants all sides of it.Nathaniel has carefully crafted his life, everything had been planned, except this slip of a wife he won along his first mission for the secret society he wishes to enter. He is a man who learned to play his talents and charms like a chess player his pawns. But Nell crumbles everything, while she appears as a perfect answer to his plight, she is not the wife he expected, and more intriguingly, she is absolutely not the woman he expected her to be. She is full of surprises and contradictions. Plus he stirs deeper feelings like any other woman before her.While he often wears his politician mask, I loved he considered Nell enough, even from the beginning, to spare her the use of his fine words.
