This short novel is beautifully written, with a subtle tension spurring up between the two alternating perspectives. This is about two people facing the reality of age and loss--the expectations we have for ourselves and those that are placed upon us. I've never read Calisher before and I am curious to see where her other novels take me. This is a neglected gem.
