Description

As an Italian opera diva, Greta Garbo is luminous, haunting, desirable, mysterious and transcendentally lovely. No wonder she personifies romance for both an aging millionaire (Lewis Stone) and a boyish rector (Gavin Gordon) caught in the tortured throes of a forbidden love. Garbo followed up her smash talkie debut Anna Christie with this tale of a woman whose tender relationship with the younger clergyman is crushed by her remorse over her illicit affair with the wealthy roue. Suffused with glamour and ardent emotion, Romance earned a Best Actress Academy Award nomination* for Garbo and a Best Director nod for Clarence Brown, who guided his leading lady in several classic pictures, including Anna Christie and Anna Karenina.

This is one of the lesser known Garbo films and for good reason. MGM Studios realized they could make money on a Garbo film, only if she was in the film. Such was the case with "Romance". The story line, other Actors (except Lewis Stone who starred with Greta Garbo more than any other male Actor), and the overall film is lack luster, but Garbo shines, and the Studio knew at the time that was all they needed for a Garbo film to make money. As was often the case, the film is worth watching because Greta Garbo is in it, not that the film is good in other respects. And such a tactic worked for many of her films at MGM until Irving Thalberg took special charge of her films, and her career began to reach a much higher status than had previously been the case as her films became balanced with script, music, other Actors and special direction for Miss Garbo that had been lacking in many of her early talking pictures. The camera work by William Daniels was always exceptional in all of the films he acted as cameraman, and that included most of her films. Garbo's silent films are another story.
