I discovered Madame Montserrat in the DVD with her cast in the Title Role of Norma. The production itself is an astounding, and memorable show, taking place outdoors, at night, in an ancient colliseum..and suddenly, the wind kicks in-but the show must go on! Amazing to watch. Even more jaw dropping was Montserat Caballe's performance. I know we all like our "stars" to sport figures like those on Dancing With the Stars. But if we can set aside our preteen obsession with teenage female 'bods', and just listen, man! I never forgot her performance; indeed, it started me on the road to an unending interest in opera in general-at a point in my life when I thought I'd never listen to 'boring old opera'. This glorious woman demonstrated why this entire body of music has endured for hundreds of years, as silly fashions come and absurd belief systems go.Now, I must confess that I have several CD's by this fabulous woman. One of my favorites, played over and over, is her Zarzuela collection, with her husband accompanying her in the duets. What talents! Those of us who think we can sing can only sit and listen, and turn practically demoralized with envy (wink). Here is another one you will absolutely not regret buying. A huge plus is the wonderful, and resplendent aria she sings in Norma, which totally floors the enthusiastic audience, (in the DVD version)-all of whom KNOW who this woman is). I urge you to find out for yourselves. Here's a good analogy: in audiophile circles, there is a phenomena known as 'listener fatigue'-meaning some hi fi amps seem to wear you out at loud sound pressure levels - while others, do not 'hurt your ears' so to speak. This woman has that enviable quality money cannot buy. Her voice, in my view, is the reason the very word "melifluous" exists in the dictionary. I never tire of her. The only drawback is the simple fact that I am now spoiled by what a lovely soprano voice is. I cannot find another one to satisfy me. Listen, and you will understand.
