This is a fantasy novel but has elements of a police procedural, a political/spy thriller, and a Elmore Leonard style crime novel. You'd think that none of these would work in a fantasy novel, but in this case you'd be wrong. Wrong because, the author blends the different elements seamlessly. This book is a sequel to Battlemage but the main characters from the first book are relatively minor players are only mentioned in passing. Bloodmage introduces brand new characters to the cast of this series. It also explores the seedy underbelly of the city of Perizzi and makes it something of a character of it's own. A city that was a major player in much of the events in Battlemage. If that was all there was to this book you know you have a good book. However the author lays the ground work for future books in the series by dropping tantalizing hints and breadcrumbs of future plot points to come. At first glance they don't seem significant but I have no doubt they'll prove to be be important later.
