Joan Elizabeth Shaw, aka "Salena Jones," is an American-born jazz and cabaret singer now living in London. Over the last forty years, Ms Jones has toured the world with jazz superstars like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington - she's recorded almost forty albums - and she's huge in Japan. Which may explain why her records are so hard to find in the US - they are mostly on Japanese labels and they tend to be expensive. That's a shame, because she's one heck of a singer!Ms Jones has a beautiful resonate contralto voice with a little smoke at the low end of her register - precise diction and intonation - and a relaxed, swinging style. If you are into the standards, Ms Jones is your kind'a singer, but "Romance" isn't about the "standards" - at least not the songs jazzers think of when they use the word."Romance" is a set of songs adapted from classical, (and by "classical" I mean Beethoven, not Ellington), instrumental pieces with lyrics written by Ann Rachlin and Iain Kerr. For example: "Moonlight Love" is based on Debussy's "Clair de Lune, #3" and "E-Mail Female" is taken from "Humorouresque #7 in G Flat" by Dvorak. Sounds a little weird? Well, I thought so - but Ms Jones was in fine voice and the songs work surprisingly well. The album was recorded in London and the musicians are all from the British classical music and jazz scenes. I'm not a big fan of "jazz with strings," but within the context of this project, it works. If you like your jazz smooooooth and romantic, "Romance" is the album for you.The sonics are audiophile quality - crystal clear and finally etched.
