While this book addresses an important topic, some of the chapters are less relevant to school counselors where there is little to no diversity. Most of the book is well written, but some sentences require re-reading due to complex structure and vocabulary. For example: "Whether or not specifically performance-based or authentic, alternative assessments achieve greater reliability through the use of predetermined and specific evaluation criteria." So it's best to read this book with few distractions and when feeling mentally alert. There are some ideas in the book that could use further elucidation. For example: "And finally, the autonomy schema involves the White individual's increased awareness of his or her own Whiteness, reduced feelings of guilt, acceptance of one's own role in perpetuating racism, and a renewed determination to abandon White entitlement. A school counselor in this schema is knowledgeable about racial, ethnic, and cultural differences, values diversity, and is not fearful, intimidated, or uncomfortable with the reality of race."The chapters that are most likely relevant to all school counselors would be on program assessment, challenging bias, and coordinating support services for at-risk students.
